August 2005

By Norma Jean Ream

At this high point of summer, we feel a lot of energy. Through most of the month of August, we will have the opportunity to be organizing and bringing order to our lives. We start the month with Mercury retrograde until the 15th, and then passing through the area it just reviewed. Mercury, planet of information, ideas, and the thinking/learning process, demands that we revisit, rethink, and sort out whatever is clogging our perspective on life. As it turns direct and covers the same territory for the third time, we set things firmly into place after eliminating the clutter. Thus, by September, we can be ready to move into projects that challenge our clarity and intention.

In July, Saturn and Mars changed to new signs. Mars generally only spends about six weeks in a sign. In October, it will be turning retrograde and will spend a total of seven months in the sign of Taurus. The impact of this is likely to be a very sluggish economy, because Taurus is the sign of money and values. Taurus is very slow, ponderous energy and a poor place for the action and drive of Mars. We should take this opportunity to work at tasks that benefit from slow, diligent attention and action. Try not to panic about slowed down financial matters. Knowing that October to December will be the months that money will trickle gives you an alert that you should prepare and save. Speculation will slow and it is timely to not be overextended. In addition, Mars will have three challenges to Saturn that will punctuate the rest of the year: August 1, November 16, and December 28.

Saturn is slow and spends 2 ½ years in a sign. It has a 28 to 30 year cycle. Saturn is relative to the order and structure of life and development. Its movement through Leo will emphasize a higher expectation in basic standards.  People born between August 1946 and December 1948, and September 1975 and July 1978, will be experiencing the completion of Saturn’s old cycle and the initiation of a new one. Like the New Moon phase, it is a time to plant new seeds of action and intention relative to the structure of your life. The changes that come in a person’s life under the Saturn return can range from a mild rearrangement to a dramatic renovation of structures that define who we are and what we do. The sign of Leo brings out pride, authority, and leadership qualities to the level that we are individually able to progress with the burden of greater responsibility.

The August 4 New Moon in Leo is bounded by Saturn on one side and Mercury, retrograde on the other. The month will be a blend of fun, entertainment, and partying, but with a mixture of gossip, secrets leaking, and strong judgments and opinions passed around.

By the Full Moon on August 19, Mercury is direct, but passing along a territory in Leo that will pulse with dramatic exchanges. Decisions made through the end of August will have a lot of bravado that could be unrealistic in actuality. This is not a great time to push issues under stress, because the egocentric energies of Leo planets may lack objectivity and concern for others involved.

Due to the interactions between Mars and Saturn, the rest of 2005 will feature the tension between their cross-purposes. Saturn controls and Mars is the force and action. The reasoning behind political activities is greatly distorted by this combined force. Executive decisions about military activity will take a stubborn stand, holding firmly to the power. If we thought security was a big deal during the last almost 3 years, be prepared for greater rigidity and limitations on individual movement increasing over the next 3 years.
