May 2005

By Norma Jean Ream

After a very dramatic month, May will bring out the more stabilizing energies relative to the issues that the April eclipses stimulated. Relationships were the hot topic last month. The self versus others polarity with its mine or ours dilemma will draw out the things that are most common to the human experience. That is primarily love, comfort, and security.

On very personal and individual levels, this may have us deciding what we are willing to live with and what we are ready to release. If the discomfort of adaptation in relationships calls us out to address our personal truth, we might have to let go somewhere. Reaching for individual personal growth often demands that we shed the old skin that has become so comfortable and familiar. On the other hand, to remain in the old skin might come through allowing and stretching where we thought things would burst at the seams. Change is often difficult, yet like the seasons, the growth just happens and before we know it, everything has changed. This month a predominance of earth energies will bring a period of constancy, of stasis and balance, however temporary.

On the collective and mundane levels, the New Moon on May 7 highlights basic needs such as housing, employment, and food. There is a pattern left over from the April 8 eclipse that continues to force issues that bring up the question of social welfare or personal responsibility. Many people at the lower level of the economic ladder are suffering in paradise, while land prices continue to skyrocket at a rate of over 4 percent a month. More people arrive on the island in search of their piece of the rock, thus stretching the economy. Yet the homeless issue becomes more common. The Food Bank drive to help support the needy still comes up short. The contrast in economic values is likely to become stark over the next several months. How will neighborhoods deal with these problems? What will the government do to address the needs of people who are less and less able to make do here? As a community, Puna represents a gold mine to some and a tightening belt to others.

The Full Moon on May 23 shifts the element influences to air signs. Air signs represent ideas and communication; they allow things to occur through exchanges. People who have plenty will be resistant to recognizing the struggle of less fortunate around them. It may take longer to hear the needs and produce new ideas to address the problems. In both the New and Full Moon charts for May, the Moon, representing the people, is in the area of home, family, and community. It would serve the greater good if we addressed these issues of housing and feeding people more readily as if we were all one family. By the middle of June, many families with young children are likely to be in trouble and looking to the social system for help. Even individuals with no one to rely on may be looking for assistance more than ever. The self versus others polarity will continue to echo through the late spring into next winter. This could be a wonderful time to experience the joy of sharing with others and working together for a stronger, healthier, and more prosperous community.
